A Few Tips For Weed Prevention

Home & Garden Blog

Whether it is a vegetable garden, your flower beds, or a grassy lawn, seeing weeds growing up, taking away the nutrients, and blocking the sun is maddening and frustrating. It can be difficult to get rid of the weeds without harming anything else growing in the area. Getting down on your hands and knees and pulling all the weeds is time-consuming and, for many people, painful. It is actually better and easier to prevent the weeds from emerging in the first place. Here are a few tips to do so.

Mulch

In gardens, regardless of what is growing, you can apply mulch to keep down the weeds. If you apply it soon after turning the soil for planting, you won't have to worry about weeds that have taken root and may be strong enough to emerge through the mulch. Turn the soil, plant your seeds or plants, and cover the rest of the area with mulch. Make sure to leave enough space for your plants to grow. Talk with a local nursery to find out if the things you are planting should have a special type of mulch to add nutrients to the soil or not.

Landscape Cloth

Another good way to keep weeds from growing is with landscape cloth. Prepare the soil and lay down the cloth. If you need to put down multiple pieces of cloth, be sure to overlap them and use a landscape staple to keep them in place. Once the cloth is in place, you can cut holes to do your planting.  Be sure to use the cloth designed to keep weeds from growing and not just a shade cloth.

Proper Mowing

When weeds in the grass are a problem, it is important to keep the grass at a good height to block the sun from getting to any tiny weeds. Allow your grass to be a bit taller than normal. In addition, it is important that you fill in any spots that are bare or sparse. You need a thick, healthy lawn to choke out any weeds.

It can be a good idea to hire a company to come in and keep the weeds from growing in your yard, whether the grass or gardens. They will work hard to keep the weeds from growing and will be there to get rid of any that manage to get through your deterrents.  You should not have to look at weeds making our beautiful yard look unkempt.
