How To Get Rid Of Sugar Ants In The House

Home & Garden Blog

As the name implies, sugar ants are the kind of ants you will likely find in the morning after you didn't see the spilled sugar on the counter. These tiny black or orange bugs are 2 mm to 15 mm long, and they commonly get active at night. Luckily, it is easy to get rid of them with organic methods as well as with a variety of pest control supplies. Follow these steps to get rid of sugar ants in the house.

Prepare to Get Rid of The Ants

To get rid of sugar ants, gather:

  • rags
  • sponge
  • white vinegar
  • distilled water
  • lemon juice
  • baking soda
  • white sugar, mint jelly, or honey
  • boric acid
  • small jars with holes
  • wadded toilet paper
  • masking tape (optional)
  • cardboard

Sweep the floors after you eat, then wipe down counters and sinks with baking soda and a damp sponge. Be certain to keep dishes washed, so crumbs won't attract them. If you can't get to them immediately, give them a quick rinse.

Trap Them With Boric Acid and a Sticky Substance

The first step to tackle the issue is to find how they get inside. Ants commonly find their way in through poorly sealed windows and doors, or wall and floor cracks. If you aren't sure how they get inside, leave bait like a small amount of sugar at the suspected entry point, then vacuum.

Set a permanent trap with boric acid and sugar. Don't inhale boric acid fumes.

Mix ten teaspoons of sugar and a teaspoon of boric acid in water, or mix enough to make a thick paste. Dab a wad of tissue paper in the solution.

Stuff the jar with the tissue, and set it where you discovered the ants getting inside, and add extra solution as it dries. Check it several hours later, and discard the jars.

Alternately, make a trap with boric acid and honey. Mix equal parts of honey and boric acid, coat cardboard with it, then set it at the entry point.

Another option is combine two tablespoons of boric acid with eight ounces of mint jelly. Scoop the mixture into a squeezable bottle with a lid, then lay masking tape at the entry point. Add a two-inch layer of the mixture to the tape.

Try White Vinegar or Lemon Juice

Use white vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar, or you will still have the problem. Mix vinegar and distilled water in a spray bottle, and spray the nest.

Alternately, combine four tablespoons of lemon juice and distilled water in a spray bottle, and mist the ants. This should have the same results as vinegar.
