Enjoying A Camping Trip In Your Own Backyard

Home & Garden Blog

If your children want to try camping, and you do not have the funds or time to go on a longer trip away from home, try improvising by holding a camping excursion in your own backyard. Your children will enjoy the experience in learning about camping and the tasks needed to have a successful session while you enjoy the peace of mind in knowing you are not hitting the open road, causing you to miss work or tasks you need to undertake at home. Here are some tips you can try to help in making an "at-home camping trip" fun for all.

Gather A Few Supplies

If you do not have a tent to stay inside, take a look at online social media selling groups to see if you can get a second-hand one for the fraction of the cost of a new one. It will be necessary to have a form of lighting so your children can see what they are doing when nighttime sets in. Purchase an outdoor lantern as this as a stationary base, allowing your children to set it in one area of their tent or outside of their sleeping quarters to use as a nightlight if desired. Sleeping bags or thick blankets will be needed for comfort as well.

Make A Few Rules

Before you allow your children to stay outdoors for the evening, inform them they are not to leave your property for any reason. If they would feel better with a parent nearby when they slumber, bring your own sleeping bag to the camping trip and join in on the fun. Let your children know that during a camping trip, it is best to keep all electronic devices in the house so they can enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors to the fullest, without distractions in the way. If you are not going to be staying outdoors, let your children know they can flash their lantern on and off several times to get your attention if necessary. You can also get their attention by turning a porch light on and off. These signals will alert the other party that help is needed.

Set Up A Schedule

One fun way to get the full experience of a camping trip is with a schedule of events to follow. This way your children will not miss out on any features most people enjoy during this type of excursion. This will also give your children guidelines to follow, helping them to become excited about the next event you have listed for them to try. Make it a point to toast marshmallows and make s'mores over a small fire you provide. Tell ghost stores by the light of a lantern, have a scavenger hunt, identify different plants in your yard, and look for critters hiding out in obscured places. Your children will remember the time you spent with them and will most likely want to camp out again in the future.
