Tips For Caring For Your Residential Awnings

Home & Garden Blog

If you have awnings on your home, you will want to make sure that you are doing everything possible to take care of them. This way, they will not only last for as long as possible, but they will continue to look great while still hanging over your windows and doors. To help you with this, you might want to take a few moments to review the following helpful tips.

Remove Them For Periodic Cleanings

While you could attempt to clean the awnings while they are still attached to your house, that might prove to be a little more difficult than simply cleaning them after they have been removed. With the awnings removed, you will be able to thoroughly clean all of the sides. You will also have the chance to look closely at the awnings to determine if there are any areas that need to be repaired.

Use Mild Soaps

You want to be careful to steer clear of bleach or other strong chemicals when it comes time to clean the awnings. The best things to use is nothing more than warm water with a very mild soap. Make sure that you are using a soft bristle brush, as this will allow you to clean it up, without causing too much friction on the fabric or metal. Do make sure that you are thoroughly rinsing the soap off. Leaving any soap residue behind can cause a problem with the appearance of your awnings, as the sun will dry it up and cause it to stain your awnings.

Remove Them For Upcoming Storms

While most awnings are perfectly fine to stay in place during normal storms, you may want to remove them if you know there are major storms coming your way. For example, if you will soon be experiencing hurricane-like winds or an extremely heavy snow fall, you may want to remove the awnings and store them in the basement or garage. This way, they will not be ripped off of the house and possibly completely ruined from the storm. In some regions many people will simply remove their awnings before the start of every winter because they are used to getting a substantial amount of snowfall.

With those few things in mind, you should have no trouble keeping your awnings in the best shape possible. Should you need assistance with their maintenance, you could always call in an experienced contractor such as Lehman Awning Company to give you a hand.
